Woody Williams’ spot in the rotation was tenuous at best.
In his third start of the spring, March 12 against the Detroit Tigers, he gave up 10 hits and eight runs, including four home runs, in three innings.
“It left me scratching my head, to tell you the truth,” Williams said after mercifully exiting after the third inning during Houston’s 11-4 loss.
With three starts remaining this spring, including March 17 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Williams is up against the clock in his bid to land one of the two remaining spots in the back end of the rotation.
Coming into spring training, Williams was considered the front-runner for the No. 4 spot. At the same time, manager Cecil Cooper said Williams would have to win the job.
