Hoffman, Padres start over 6 months after gut-wrenching loss to Rockies (AP)
Trevor Hoffman was walking across the San Diego Padres’ clubhouse one day late in spring training when he found his path blocked by Kevin Kouzmanoff, who was checking out a new bat. Hoffman wisely pulled up and let the third baseman finish his swings. “Colorado loves me enough already,” baseball’s career saves leader cracked.

Wigginton’s homer leads Astros to 9-4 win over Tigers in exhibition finale (AP)
Ty Wigginton’s three-run homer keyed a five-run sixth inning and the Houston Astros defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-4 in the final exhibition game for both teams Saturday. Shawn Chacon pitched five innings for Houston, allowing three runs and five hits. He struck out one, walked two and said he felt ready for the season.

Carlos Guillen drove in four runs and Jeremy Bonderman pitched four shutout innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 10-0 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night. Bonderman scattered three hits and struck out four with one walk. Gary Sheffield went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Miguel Cabrera had two triples for Detroit.
