Brandon Backe and the Houston Astros agreed Friday to an $800,000, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration. Backe, who missed almost a year following elbow ligament-replacement surgery, returned late last season and was 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA in five starts for Houston. Backe has a 22-15 record and 4.63 ERA in 47 starts in six seasons with Tampa Bay and Houston.
